Maine Sustainable Florist
Sustainable social and business practices have been at the core of our mission since our inception in 2013. Some sustainability highlights include:
Buying near 100% of our flowers from Maine flower farms from April through October, with lucky bits even in winter avoiding the environmental catastrophe of flying floral materials around the world and averting the use of flowers grown with the harmful/substandard flower farming practices of other countries
Supporting local, often organic or low impact, mostly women-run flower farms
Working with plants, dried Maine flowers, and special foraged greenery into our shop options to limit the need for imported floral materials off season
Hiring highly skilled floral designers adept at creating balanced and breathtaking floral arrangements with whatever seasonal flowers are thriving that change from week to week
Composting our floral scraps
Avoiding bleached and chemically dyed flowers
Avoiding the use of floral foam, plastic vessels, and excessive packaging in our event design work and daily flower deliveries
Buying vessels from local ceramicists
Renting all wedding and event flower vessels to permit reuse
Using glass, metal, and paper almost exclusively in our design work
Donating a portion of Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day flower sales to various non-profits
Consulting with wedding clients about choosing materials and designs that will create the least environmental impact
